I think it’s probably fair to say if you’d asked me what my favourite band was at the age of fourteen, my answer would have been ‘Nirvana. Now get out of my room, I’m trying to kill this cacodemon.’

I don’t remember buying this, which leads me to believe that perhaps it’s not actually mine and was left by a friend and later surreptitiously slotted into the rack. (This method of acquisition probably accounts for about 3% of my CD collection).

As Nirvana albums go, it’s not the best, but given its post-Nevermind rush-release mish-mash of b-sides, one-off singles, covers and outtakes, that’s perhaps to be expected. The first half is brilliant, mind you — the fast version of Polly, Dive, Sliver, Stain. The second half drags through some sludgy metal before reaching a high point with Aneurysm (the pedal switching between clean and fuzz is a thing of beauty).

Incesticide wasn’t an album I ever really reached for much, though occasionally tracks from it will pop up on shuffle now and I’ll go back to it. The first half of it, anyway.

Documenting my CD collection one scratched copy of Definitely Maybe at a time.
